6 sex abuse suits filed

[NorthJersey.com] Attorneys filed six lawsuits Tuesday against St. Mary’s Abbey and the order that runs the Delbarton School in Morris Township — the first of more than 20 such complaints they plan to file.

The suits contain new allegations of abuse by five men who were monks of the Order of St. Benedict of New Jersey and one former lay teacher at Delbarton. Four of the clerics and the teacher had been named in prior suits settled by the order. St. Mary’s has settled 10 sex abuse lawsuits since 2018 and at least six additional complaints over the years.

“There are numerous additional plaintiffs whose cases we will be filing soon,” said Greg Gianforcaro, one of the attorneys, adding that a total of more than 20 cases, including those filed Tuesday, will be brought against the order.
